“I don’t know how to do xyz….”
Good one, Kay. I know you’re not alone with this fear. A matter of fact, I have experienced this one personally. Here are some ways you might want to try approaching the “I don’t know how to do xyz….” fear.
Ask yourself some questions in the form of sentence completions.
“IF I DECIDE to try to figure out how to do xyz, what I MIGHT want to try to do first is…”
This is no random sentence. It’s designed in very specific way to make it possible for you to figure out how to do xyz. Secondly it’s asked in such a way so as not to freak out the amygdala (the old freak-out part of your brain). Which means, you wont be afraid to take action once you have something figured out.
Let’s break down the sentence.
1. IF I DECIDED:
• Two important things are happening here. “IF” means you don’t have to, it’s a choice, you’re just pondering. Since there’s no real risk of action, hence danger, the fight or flight amygdala will hush up and let you think.
• I DECIDE:
It’s YOUR choice. If YOU decide then something might happen. It’s up to you. You might decide to go to the cinema instead.
• to try to:
Again, this makes the lizard brain stay in napping mode.
• What I MIGHT want to try first:
Now you have all the room and the safety to imagine. Imagining is what human brains do really well. Now you can come up with possibilities. Adding the word “first” also cues your brain it doesn’t have to have the whole bloody thing figured out, just some first steps to get started.
Get a few possibilities down on paper. Wonder which one you might want to try. See if you can identify one action to take first if you decide to take it. Then, if you want to take it, go for it. Or if you still feel a little shaky, go use the Accountability Chat and get a little support.
I want you to be able to do those big scary things. Especially the ones where you wonder, “who am I to think I could….” Or any the xyz’s that would make you stand up straighter and say, “oh my gosh, I can’t believe I actually….!”
